Somerville has a large amount of bicycle theft. The thieves are generally opportunistic, usually walking along, seeing an unlocked or unsecured bike, and just riding off on it. This happens very frequently. We confiscate many bicycles that are found abandoned, and they are stored by us until they can legally be auctioned off once or twice a year. It is for this reason that we ask you to please REGISTER YOUR BICYCLE with us. The more detail you can provide us the better, even if you have to make notes on the bottom of the registration form. Please also list any special markings or owner applied identification numbers. Maybe we can return your bicycle to you!
