In 1994, the Bicycle Unit in Somerville was created and six officers rode on a regular basis. This continued pending staffing needs, until May of 2000, when the Community Policing Unit took over primary responsibility for bicycle patrol.

    The program has been very successful, both in productivity from the officers, as well as a positive response from the community.
